Atlassian Data Lake & Analytics overview
What is the Atlassian Data Lake?
By book definition, a data lake is a centralized repository that allows you to store all of your structured and unstructured data at any scale.
By Atlassian definition, our data lake contains cross-product and cross-instance data for easy analysis with pre-modeled and enriched fields to speed up insight generation. The Atlassian Data Lake is built on the enterprise-grade trusted Atlassian platform to ensure privacy and security.
Simply put, the Atlassian Data Lake will contain data from the Atlassian portfolio of apps in one central place to make querying across apps simpler.
As of Apr 25, 2023, only data for Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Jira Work Management, Jira Product Discovery, Confluence, and Opsgenie are available in the Atlassian Data Lake at this time. Data for more products are coming soon.
What is Atlassian Analytics?
The Atlassian Analytics platform is a cross-product reporting tool that will provide users access to analytics across projects, sites/instances, and products. Customers will be able to seamlessly connect to the Atlassian Data Lake and build custom dashboards where they can add charts of various types (table, single value, pie, line, bar, etc.) along with dashboard controls (dropdowns, text input, calendars, etc.) which act as interactive filters to manipulate the data displayed in connected charts.
The chart-building interface has two modes: SQL visualization, which allows users to write their own queries, and no-code visualization, which allows users to build their queries without any coding. This enables all users to explore data, from experienced analysts to business users. User permissions allow admins to determine who can create charts and who can only view them. Dashboards and charts are interactive with sharing and commenting features to promote collaboration amongst teams.
Key benefits
Until now, analytics and insights have been trapped in product and team silos, while custom reporting required the knowledge and expertise to extract data using APIs and scripts. Atlassian Analytics and Data Lake are breaking down those silos to provide analytics across teams and products, as well as enabling users to perform easy analysis with little to no technical expertise. The new data and insights stack will include:
- Contextual insights: Key metrics delivered in the context of work
- In-product dashboards: Data displays and reporting inside each product
- Custom analytics: Interactive, customer dashboards
- Data access: Pre-modeled, enriched data across all Atlassian products (beginning with just Jira Software and Jira Service Management)
