Background

Program leadership has an idea of what capacity looks like, but looking at historical data can help tell the story of how much work a program can take on
Although historical data can provide great insights into capacity, sometimes PIs occur during a period of time that dramatically changes capacity for the program (e.g. a holiday)

How to

This procedure will show you how to override calculated program increment (PI) capacity for a program using Jira Align.

How to override program PI capacity

From the Program menu, navigate to the Backlog page
1. Set the context configuration to Program = <this program>, Program Increment = <next three PIs>
2. Set the view to Viewing: Feature Backlog in the upper left cornerOutput and Next Steps
3. Click the Kanban button in the top left and select Column View
  1. At the top of the first column (PI), click the Override button
    1. Check the box and enter a total story points capacity for the PI for the program
    2. Click Save
  2. Repeat for each future PI in the view

Plan features into the PIs using the new PI capacity as a guardrail
Use updated program capacity to adjust forecasts and roadmaps
