Introduction

Check market fit
“Measure twice, cut once.” - Proverb
It’s one thing to do work; it’s another thing measure the impact of that work and then pivot. Checking market fit is all about reflecting on the impact of delivered work and then reassessing whether the next set of work to be pursued is still the the right path forward.

Decisions to make

  • After reviewing demo results, decide if the completed features for a product or service delivered the value expected
  • Decide if objectives related to completed features were met during the planning period
  • Decide whether the value delivered from the completed features meets the needs of the customer or market

Context

  • The product or service work (features and stories) has been completed and delivered to the customer and/or market

Why we care

  • Feedback on business value helps determine and measure progress toward the feature benefit hypothesis
  • Product managers and business owners review and re-evaluate work, continuously asking the question “Are we building the right thing?”

The Atlassian view

  • Objectives and key results that are related to a feature benefit hypothesis are created for a planning period (e.g. program increment)
  • As work is delivered, key results are measured and check-ins are conducted to document if the work is having the expected impact
