Agile: The journey from here - Step 1: Assess
The path outlined below can help you define the transformation vision, plan milestones and identify the appropriate tools to take your agile transformation to the next level. Let’s walk you through what these steps may entail for a transformation leader that is responsible for defining a solution path to investment-level agility.
Prepare yourself. The assessment may produce unexpected surprises and even surface a bit of pain. If so, you’re doing it correctly. Remember, you are helping the people in your organization.
Step 1: Assess
The first step is to assess your current situation and determine where you are in your transformation journey. The goal in this step is to reveal areas that can be improved, make explicit your desired business outcomes and identify measures of success. If you are in need of a starter template, you can use our Atlassian’s scaled agile assessment, remember to modify it according to your specific transformation goals.
After you have modified the template to match your desired outcomes, facilitate the assessment for the whole business unit. If you use Atlassian’s template, first assess each team of teams and then assess the portfolios (value streams) for the best results. We often see the key to unlocking the next level is to solve deficiencies at the previous level so be sure to assess both adjacent levels.
Remember to take notes in the comments column on the areas rated at a '3' or below to capture raw data provided by the participants. You can use that feedback information to identify trends between teams and reveal root causes that are impeding key practice areas.
